
Modero & Co in partnership with Kampoeng and the Philadelphia Praise Center present Back to Kampoeng – Indonesian Independence Day Celebration, Saturday, August 7th. The event, which will run from 11 am until 5 pm, will bring local Indonesian food vendors, artists, interactive art and crafts, and performers together for a day to celebrate Indonesia’s 76th anniversary as an independent nation.

Opening & Flag Raising Ceremony

Join our annual tradition in celebrating our independence day. This ceremony will be attended by our Consulate General Dr. Arifi Saiman, MA and will be officially opened with the strike of the gong! Host & MC: Sinta Penyami Storms & Aldo Siahaan.

Tari Rejang (Rejang Dance)

Rejang Dewa dance is performed by female dancers with gentle and simple movements. This dance is usually accompanied by musical instrument of Gong Kebyar or Gong Gde and also Gamelan Selonding in some areas. A beautiful traditional dance blends in the strains of gamelan music and fragrant incense, truly charming and magical. Dancers: Claire, Poppy, Celine, Emma, Natasha, Keira and Gabby.
Lomba Makan Kerupuk (Cracker Eating Contest)

Krupuk or kerupuk (Indonesian), keropok (Malaysian), kropek (Filipino) or kroepoek (Dutch) are deep fried crackers made from starch and other ingredients that serve as flavouring. They are a popular snack in parts of Southeast Asia, but most closely associated with Indonesia and Malaysia.
Gita Santi Gamelan Angklung Demo by the Philadelphia Folklore Project

Classical Balinese gamelan demo by Gita Santi musicians. The Philadelphia Folklore Project work with the Indonesian community, concentrated in South Philadelphia, around the practice of traditional music and dance through the Gamelan Angklung Workshop.
Tari Merak (Peacock Dance)

Tari Merak describes the beauty and the movement of peacock and is performed to welcoming honorable guests in a big event also occasionally performed in a Sundanese wedding ceremony. The dance is performed by female dancers inspired by the movements of a peafowl and its feathers blended with the classical movements of Sundanese dance. Dancers: Cherilynn, Nikedila, Audi, Fifi and Ellyana.

Tari Kebyar Duduk

Kebyar duduk is a Balinese dance created by I Mario and first performed in 1925. Inspired by the development of the quick-paced gamelan gong kebyar, kebyar duduk is named for the seated and half-seated positions taken by the dancers. It does not convey a story, but is interpretative. Dancer: Luthfi Madjid.

Batik Demo

Watch and learn along with local batik artist Laura Cohn who has lived, worked, and studied in Indonesia for over 30 years. Laura will experiment with hot wax flowing through traditional and non-traditional batik tools as she explains the art & techniques of how this ancient craft of batik has been created in Indonesia for centuries, as well as in her studio in Philadelphia.
